The Joyful Loop

Description
It’s easy to get lost in the scale of this view. Your brain wants to process the engineering of the bridge, the height of the tower. But on this day, I found myself focused on the carousel. It sits there, almost absurdly, in its perfect little glass box. While the bridge forges a path forward and the skyline reaches for the heavens, the carousel is content to go in circles. Its only ambition is to spin to a cheerful, slightly tinny song. It’s a loop of simple, uncomplicated joy. And I think that's the secret of this photograph, for me. It’s about the two different rhythms of life that exist in the same frame. There’s the linear, relentless, forward-moving rhythm of the city—the commute, the career, the ambition. Then there’s the cyclical rhythm of joy—the laughter, the memories, the moments we wish could last forever, spinning in a perfect loop. This view is a reminder that for all our striving to get to the other side, sometimes the most important part of the journey is just enjoying the ride.
